Composer Aaron Copland used the words of Lincoln to sketch an inspiring portrait of courage and steadfastness for America as it endured World War II. His Lincoln Portrait is here paired with two symphonic masterpieces which were also composed to make a political statement: Haydn’s Farewell Symphony and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5.

Twenty years ago, shortly after the Berlin Wall fell in November 1989, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony was performed in Berlin to celebrate the peaceful victory of freedom over tyranny. We mark this important anniversary with Beethoven’s hymn to universal joy and brotherhood and Brahms’ powerful Song of Destiny.

This concert celebrates the youthful creativity of four musical prodigies. All of the works on the program were written before their composers turned 30. Samuel Barber’s hauntingly lyrical Violin Concerto will be performed by the dynamic Jennifer Koh (winner of the 1994 International Tchaikovsky Competition).
