With
our 2007-2008 season, we introduce a new face to the Binghamton Philharmonic
audience: Carlos Sánchez-Gutiérrez.
Thanks to a generous grant from the New York State Music
Fund, Carlos will serve as the Binghamton Philharmonic’s first ever composer
in residence and will create a new work for us to be premiered in April.
Carlos was born in Mexico, but now lives in Rochester where he is on the
faculty of the prestigious Eastman School of Music. I know you will enjoy
meeting him and discovering his music, which is among the very best being
composed today. We have taken Carlos’ presence as the jumping off point for
a season-long exploration of classical music from Latin America, juxtaposing
works by Revueltas, Piazzolla and Ginastera with masterpieces from Europe
and the United States. You will also hear some of Latin America’s finest
musicians: Colombian-American violinist Christina Castelli, Brazilian born
pianist José Feghali, Argentinean bandoneón legend Daniel Binelli and Puerto
Rican born baritone Guido Le Brón, a favorite of Binghamton audiences. We
hope you will join us on this voyage of cultural discovery with the
universal language of music as our guide.
